Captain James spoke with the CEO of Atlantic Cruising Yachts – Chris Bent (#1 North American Jeanneau Dealer) after he vacationed with his family in the BVI’s onboard a new Jeanneau 490. Mr. Bent revealed how much fun the new 8th Generation Sun Odyssey 490 was to sail! Here are some of his comments:
“My wife Dawn and I just finished an amazing week in the Virgin Islands, sailing the new Jeanneau 490 with our children. We had our pick of Waypoints yachts but we were most excited about the new 490. Why the 490? The excitement of true sailing performance on a very comfortable and safe platform. The 490 definitely exceeded our expectations! The walk around decks are incredible. The ability to go forward or send the kids forward with dock-lines, or bring provisions into the cockpit, all without climbing over combings, made for easy circulation around the boat for everyone. The FWD master cabin was a real treat with completely separate shower and head areas with their own entrances gave us plenty of privacy and convenience.
The best feature of this boat is the sailing performance which was the highlight of the trip for me. We sailed past every other boat out there, leaving them in our wake. We were the fastest boat that day, it felt great and the boat handled beautifully. The new hull shape allows much more stability while carrying more sail area, and it pays off big time with speed, comfort, and fun. When Dawn and I met 18 years ago, we enjoyed sailing the Virgin Islands on the old Jeanneau 45.2. It was great for us to rediscover the thrill of sailing and share it with our kids with this new 8th generation of the Jeanneau.”
Jeanneau has been a leading innovator in designing leading edge cruising boats for over 60 years. With the new Sun Odyssey series, kicking off with the 410, 440 and 490, Jeanneau raises the bar. This is a total redesign from the keel up!

Alegria 67 – Flagship Cruising Like Never Before
What People Are Saying:
I recently attended the European Debut of the Astréa 42 and Alegria 67 at the Cannes Boat Show. I personally showed the new yachts to some of my American clients. One such client named Captain Michael Schoettle (Summerland 40) said of the Alegria 67, “Splendid yacht! Perfect for both my large family and for my crewed charter project!”. His favorite features were the optional hot tub, ideally built into the yacht’s foredeck, and the hydraulic swim platform (flush with her line) for sunbathing, relaxing, scuba diving, or launch for his dinghy. Industry critics have echoed similar sentiments – the Alegria 67 is the winner of Best Monohull Sailing Yacht in Asia and the Astréa 42 is the winner of the prestigious European Yacht of the Year award.
THE PATH TOWARD “CLARITY” FOR PAUL AND TERRY
Captain Paul Valentic is no stranger to high performance and depending on his vessel when conditions are extreme. Whether in the cockpit of his USAF F-15 or Southwest Airline’s Boeing 737, or his newly-keeled 2017 Fountaine Pajot LUCIA 40, Captain Paul is happiest at the controls. He and his loving wife, Terry, fell in love with the dream of sailing the deep blue sea and with Fountain Pajot’s newest addition to their fleet of ocean cruising catamarans – the LUCIA 40.
The photo below shows Captain James Fachtmann at the helm of a recently sold Fountaine Pajot MY37 during the 2016 Fountaine Pajot Bimini photo shoot with Fountaine Pajot’s French film crew. James can be seen working with the film crew while organizing and instructing the crews of the Saba 50, Helia 44, and the Lucia 40 to line up for the filming via his handheld VHF radio. The filming was great fun and a huge success.
