I just returned from the Fountaine Pajot mid-year dealer meeting at ‘Boot Dusseldorf,’ Europe’s largest boat show. My good friends at Fountaine Pajot have certainly been busy, expanding production capacity to meet ever-increasing worldwide demand, continually designing and introducing innovative new models, all the while rolling out a steady flow of quality hulls for our existing clients. The hard work of this talented team is certainly not going unnoticed in the international yachting world.
Frank McCarthy, our West Coast Florida sales manager and I arrived after a 5.5-hour flight to Reykjavik with a quick connection and onward flight into Amsterdam’s Schipol airport. There, we met up with our Waypoints® charter manager, Susan Restauri. Susan was meeting us there to spend time working the European charter brokers, who have a large presence at Boot Dusseldorf every year, to help build new charter business for our Waypoints® charter affiliates back on this side of the Atlantic. We made the 2-hour drive over to Dusseldorf from Schipol, dropped our bags at our hotel, and promptly headed over to the sprawling convention center complex with about 5 minutes to spare for the start of the FP dealer meeting. Crisp logistics, just the way I like them.
The dealer meeting started with a summary of the last six months, a review of the incredible new flagship Fountaine Pajot 67, notes on the progress of the industrial capacity expansion from Fountaine Pajot Chairman Nicolas Gardies, and a review of the new Saba 50 Evolution Maestro layout. Then we dove into the really exciting business: the new models.
New Models – Fountaine Pajot’s Continuing Evolution
First up, the all-new Fountaine Pajot 42 sailing cat, based on the design of the highly successful Saona 47. Featuring a lifting sun lounging platform that doubles as a dinghy davit and dinghy dock, incredible volume inside and on deck, an owner’s version that rivals much larger catamarans, and all the finishing touches that have come to define Fountaine Pajot’s approach to luxury and comfort. All of this on Fountaine Pajot’s signature sailing platform of light displacement and large sail area. Hull number 1 will be in the water in June this year.
To say I was completely surprised by this new 42 would not be true, but certainly, the market and the industry were not expecting this new model. As of this writing, we have already booked orders for 7 boats for ACY clients; not bad for a design that’s been officially announced for only a few days. We have also ordered several stock boats for 2018 and 2019 deliveries to ensure, as always, that ACY can offer the best possible production slots for our clients.
The next piece of great news was the official announcement of the new MY40, to round out their range of innovative motor yachts which are winning acclaim on the global stage. It was announced yesterday that the MY 44 was awarded European Motor Yacht of the Year, an incredible honor and one that has never been awarded to a multihull design before. The MY platform of Fountaine Pajot has successfully crossed the threshold from the old trawler power cat concept to a luxury motor yacht that happens to enjoy all the proven benefits of a multihull platform. The new 40 fills in the gap between 37 and 44 very nicely, with the same designers at the 44 on a slightly smaller hull. Stay tuned for all the details of the new 40.
After the meeting, I caught up with Fountaine Pajot’s management, Nicolas, Alexandre, and Steven, for a quiet German dinner, to catch up on all of our exciting plans and business together. We have all worked closely together for so many years now, we’ve become very much like an extended family. A great trans-Atlantic partnership and friendship that serves all of us and our mutual customers so well. We’ll be together again soon in Miami, where we will have much to show and talk about together.
