The Atlantic Cruising Yachts team got an exclusive look at the highly anticipated Fountaine Pajot New 45 in Portugal this past week. One of our clients, Chris Braden, took a sea trial on the New 45 with us and recounted his experience:
“If I had to summarize the New 45 in one word it would be spacious (but not in a wide-hull-below-the-waterline kind of way). From the increase in storage compartments all over the boat, the open salon layout, to the expansive lounge deck – it’s easy to see this boat is designed with the concept of space throughout.”
Having owned a Helia 44 Evolution, I can honestly say Fountaine Pajot has surpassed the Helia in every way with the New 45. The owner’s hull is very well thought out with compartments and lockers everywhere you turn. The new salon/galley layout really opens the space up and makes the interior feel like a much bigger boat!
The new large opening window is great for ventilation or to pass food or drinks to the front of the boat. The hands down the best feature of the New 45 is the lounge deck…this thing is massive and rivals the Saba 50 in size (I’d wager slightly larger).
During the test sail, we had 8 people on the lounge deck with room to add more. The backrest is at perfect shoulder height (much better than the Helia). The boom is still within reach from the lounge deck and if you want to work inside the stackpack you can always step up onto the seating area. This is an easily reached and well thought out design with the boom perfectly placed high enough for peoples safety, but low enough for sailing safety.
The boat is no slouch when it comes to sailing either…it did 6-7 knots in 9 knots and we were up to around 10 knots in 20 knots of wind. The new helm station layout is much more ergonomic with easy access and viewing of all instruments. The autopilot is right at your fingertips as you rest your arm on the helm station railing. Also, a new feature (perhaps one of the top 3) introduced by Fountaine Pajot – cupholders! They are well placed at the helm, lounge deck seating, and lounge pads. The New 45 will be an amazing boat for both long term cruisers and charter fleets.”
Atlantic Cruising Yachts sales consultant, Rudy Vereen, added that the New 45 may be the “finest boat that Fountaine Pajot has built” with an undeniable “wow” factor.
Valerie Toomey, another Atlantic Cruising Yachts sales consultant, noted that the performance under sail was impressive with quick acceleration in 15 knots of breeze and fun and quick to tack. She emphasized the salon’s 360-degree view with comfortable seating, “throughout the boat, you will find generous amounts of entertainment area for lounging or simply reading a book or enjoying the scenery. The galley is well laid out for multiple people prepping dinner.”
It’s safe to say that the new Fountaine Pajot 45 is exceeding expectations. We can’t wait to show off this beauty when she makes her Annapolis debut at the 2019 United States Sailboat Show this October.
